Modeling Scams Modeling Scams and Film-Flam: Most modeling candidates are very young and considered fair game for con artists. If you progress in this career, you will meet a wide range of characters, some bearing gifts and extravagant promises of wealth, fame, and stardom. Of course, the oldest con in the world is the sex for fame scam. The photographer scam is another area to be watched carefully because there are a few unscrupulous photographers who will try to convince you that you just must have that $5000 photo shoot if you are going to be successful. Also be wary of hucksters who want upfront money in return for promises of contracts and stardom and be prepared for contract negotiations. You are the model and you have to look the way the client wants you to look. The photographer is the artist and the client is the one who pays you, and you have to do the job in the way they want you to do the job. Therefore ALWAYS ask what the job involves such as the type of photography, location, etc. You should do this before you accept a job; in this way you will less likely have any unwanted surprises. If you get to the contract stage in your modeling career, you need either an agent, a lawyer, or both. Internet scams are unfortunately widespread and completely unregulated. Remember that the world wide web is still at the stage of the old wild west and you have to ignore the junk and bypass the useless. The information links presented throughout this website will hopefully not fall into any of these negative categories and all are presented as a public service in an attempt to provide the reader with useful information that can be used to enlighten and enhance present and future modeling careers, but there is no implied warranty as to the accuracy of the information contained within. Such is life...what, no guarantees? What are your chances? One writer drew an interesting parallel between modeling and winning the lottery. The conclusion was that you would have a better chance of winning the lottery than of becoming a supermodel. Statistically, this is basically correct; however, winning the lottery is strictly a chance event. Although there is certainly some degree of luck involved, becoming a supermodel is not a chain of events left totally to chance. The point is that there are only a very small number of supermodels, Playboy models and Sports Illustrated cover models and so on, and there are thousands of incredibly beautiful and talented women vying for that tiny allocation at the top of the pyramid. It is one thing to have a dream and quite another to have a realistic career goal - a Plan B of action in case the dream never materializes. For example, your goal might be to someday be on the cover of a national magazine. Your alternative plan might simply be to work in the fashion industry while you are working on Plan A; that is flexibility on your part and a realistic view of the world of modeling.
Summary: Much of the literature written about modeling careers often has a somewhat negative slant towards the future career prospects of upcoming models. There is nothing wrong with the career itself nor with the people who are already on the inside. Again the problem is simply that the demand for the needed small percentage of high quality models is far exceeded by the supply. In truth, many beginners who are turned away, overlooked, or who simply give up, may in fact have the necessary qualities to be successful in the modeling profession. There will be a few for who a modeling career will simply fall into their lap with little or no effort observed on their part that resulted in their discovery. For the rest, the road will involve considerably more work and personal determination, neither of which carries any guarantee of success. Still, why shouldn't you work for your goal and even follow your dream? Remember that you don't have to be "super
beauty" to be a model. There are only a few supermodels in the world, but a lot of
others make a living with their modeling job. Special models do jobs for Faces, Hands,
Feet, etc. For Fashion and Catwalk there are limitations, for advertisements, billboards,
commercials it is just what the clients is looking for. This means that everybody has a
chance in the modeling world. Besides, if you have the qualities and the determination to
be a model, whether famous or not so famous,
