Why You Need a Modeling Agency
Return to Models Get Listed
Almost every famous and successful model, actor, actress, musician, athlete and performer
has an agent. Agents are seemingly as ubiquitous as the air we breath and just as
essential to life for a model. The industry is too vast and complex to deal with
individually and most models simply will not have the time or resources to manage
themselves.
There are models who are known as free-lance models who do not belong to a modeling agency
but have an agent. There are also a very few models who do not belong to a modeling agency
and do not have a modeling agent. This latter phenomenon is not common among professional
models. The competition is simply to fierce and successful models need someone full time
to keep them in work and beginning models need the same assistance to find work. The
"go it alone" model can survive if modeling is not a full time profession or the
only source of income. This work arrangement is most often found in young models who are
also students or part-time models who have other jobs. Still, a modeling agency seems
almost essential for long term professional and financial success. Although the modeling
agent and the modeling agency exist to make money for themselves, they cannot do this
unless you, the model, are also successful and making money. The more successful and the
more money the model makes, the more money the modeling agent and the modeling agency
makes. So, it is a convenient symbiotic relationship that may also include other
professionals such as photographers and even lawyers.
If you are represented by a modeling agency, you may or may not have your own agent but it
is easy to see why it can be a vicious experience for the model. Modeling agencies
generally prefer to have established models working for them because these
"supermodels" can command huge salaries. If you are a new model, you must have a
strong personality and considerable patience to survive rejection. It is not personal, it
is just business. When you are starting out as a model, remember that almost any type of
modeling work is good work because modeling is definitely a career where experience is
almost everything and education and training are secondary. As your portfolio and resume
grows, so too will your success as a model.
You can easily find a modeling agency by looking in the yellow pages of your phone book.
If you do not have a modeling agency nearby, you can also apply for representation at the
larger national and international modeling agencies who represent both models and business
clients from all over the world.
