The Intelligent Model Will a college degree help? Well, yes it might help you get a job not related to modeling and it might even help you land a modeling job IF all of the other variables fall into place. A college degree is not a prerequisite for a modeling career; however, a college degree is certainly a plus in the overall scheme of things and there are some things you can do at college that would improve your stature as a potential model. Two examples, that immediately present themselves as BIG PLUSES are communications and language. Modeling agencies are looking for young females and males who first and foremost have the "LOOK". Agencies are somewhat less interested in modeling candidates who have the right look but not much else to offer. Modeling is a very visible career and successful models must be able to communicate effectively in public speaking venues. College classes and training in speech and communications can improve the value of your personal stock considerably. While not essential, training in a second language can also be a plus on your resume. However, the main point is that you might just as well attend college to become a biologist or any other career of your choice while taking supplemental courses in communications and language. That is the flexibility factor that many new model candidates do not have and you can still pursue a modeling career while you are in college.
What if you don't want to go to college? That's fine too but you may still need to get a job. Some models already have modeling contracts BEFORE they have finished high school. This is not an uncommon occurrence although there are risks associated with early stardom. You might be able to find entry level, part-time work as a model with clothing stores, fashion shops, hair styling salons, shopping malls, photographers, advertising agencies, retail shops and even modeling agencies. Every time you apply for a modeling job, one of the first and most important things you will be asked is "where else have you modeled and what else you have done"? Landing that first assignment, no matter how trivial, will make each succeeding step easier and with each assignment, your resume becomes more attractive to future modeling agents.
